First Love, Last Love by Jewel Dartt

However a cholera epidemic suddenly sweeps the little township of Clayton. Despite the efforts of Brendon, Kat and others, many people die, among them Kat's beloved grandfather. They delay their wedding, unable to celebrate under circumstances where the grief of loss is still so recent and raw.

One afternoon when Brendon is out, Kat is called to see to the ills of a woman and child sheltering in an old apple store. When she walks in and sees no one there she realizes she has been trapped. The mad seeker of revenge pulls a gun. As he sets cocks it and Kat believes that there is no hope Brendon unexpectedly appears at the door. The madman exults - his three bullets will hit his three victims - first Kat, then Brendon, and finally himself - in short shrift.

Suddenly the madman's plan is thwarted, the threat is done away with and Kat and Brendon's first love is set to be their last.

This book is light and enjoyable, set under believable circumstances with clearly drawn characters. Despite adverse conditions the romance flourishes and there are a couple of vivid, torrid scenes between Kat and Brendon. The final episode where the man who threatens Kat's life is unmasked is short and unexpected after building suspense through the length of the novel.
