California 1880. Dr. Johanna Schell is saved from a knife attack while trying to save a child from his abusive father. Johanna returns to her home (Der Haven) and the residents in Silverado Springs. Her residents, the patients, which she brought with when she and her father left Pennsylvania, had a variety of mental conditions. On her long walk home from the station Johanna's foot comes in contact with a man who is passed out. Her patients range from May, the youngest at 14; Irene, a former stage actress; Oscar, the lovable man with a child's mind; the former Reverend Lewis Anderson; Harper, a war veteran in a deep depression and her ill father, Wilhelm. And now, it seems, this inebriate the good doctor rescued on her way home. Johanna is surprised when this patient survives the delirium tremens and offers to treat him.

Quentin Forster woke up and remembered his name. His periods of amnesia were increasing each time. Every time he promised himself he wouldn't take another drink...until next time. Johanna tells him he must quit drinking and she might have a way to help him through hypnosis. Irene is jealous and wants Quentin to herself and Quentin placates Irene by going along with her requests.

Quentin meets Harper and feels a kinship with Harper since they were both in a war. A quiet camaraderie develops between them. Quentin makes friends with most of the residents. Johanna is surprised that even May wants to be near him. Quentin is determined to let Johanna help him but worries that she will find out his deepest, darkest secret. What will her reaction be when she does discovers it? Quentin's angst and heart wrenching story will keep you reading to find out what happens. You'll also want to read to see the wonderful relationships and friendships with the rest of the lovable cast.

This is the last in the trilogy of Touch of the Wolf and Once a Wolf . A touching, sometimes dark, and sexy paranormal with an eye and soul catching cover that made me wish I hadn't missed Ms. Krinard's other two titles in the trilogy.
