Fallen
Emma Jensen Ivy Books Paperback ISBN: 0-8041-1955-4 Reviewed by Megan Kopp Gabriel Loudon, the Earl of Rievaulx and special agent to the British Army, has came to Isle of Skye in 1812 to find L’Ecossais, the Scottish spy selling secrets to France. He also hopes to find a small measure of closure for a past error in judgment that haunts his life and shades his character. He doesn’t plan to fall for the comely charms of Maggie MacLeod, nor be drawn into the simple, close knit circle of the locals on the island. With the blessing of Maggie’s father, a man fond of his cups, Gabriel finds himself at home in the MacLeod cottage. But as the Sasunnach, the English devil, he must bide his time patiently until he can find the answers he seeks and then return to his homeland. There would be no honor in seducing Maggie, and no future for falling in love. Maggie senses that Gabriel has another reason for being on Skye and the healer steadfastly keeps her distance from the Englishman, not wanting to become involved; not wanting to risk her heart as she did once before; not wanting to repeat the tragic legend of the Skye woman and her Sasunnach. Unbidden, the desire grows between the pair and together Maggie and Gabriel must cross the hurdles standing in their way. Love is challenged by loyalty. Destiny is hindered by the past. With a relaxed pace, author Emma Jensen has chosen to let the story unfold in it’s own time, as beautiful as the heather growing on the hills. The characters are well defined and easy to relate to. Readers can almost see the tension melt off the shoulders of the war-ravaged hero, watch as desire turns to love, and witness hope replacing sorrow. Fallen is a burning ember that slowly takes flame and glows into an eternity. 3 stars Bio: Megan Kopp is a Canadian freelance writer published in a variety of travel, parenting and outdoors/nature markets.
