South Texas. Tess Sinclair is on the run from her abusive husband, Randall, when she gets a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. A raven-haired Justin Boyd is also on that same nowhere road and fixes her flat for her. Tess drives off leaving Justin on that rainy road. She quickly realizes she can throw off her husband's thugs if she has someone in the car with her since they are looking for a woman driving alone. Taking her chances, she turns around and offers the handsome hitchiker a ride.

Tess and Justin evade Tony Morelli (one of Randall's thugs) on more than one occasion. Randall makes good on his threat to Morelli and kidnaps his beloved wife, Maria. When Maria is found, she is severely battered and bruised. Morelli vows to get even with Sinclair.

Justin sees an inner strength in Tess and feels it is up to him to help her realize it. Even after Tess tries to leave Justin at a gas station, Justin refuses to let her go. Justin feels responsible for his sister's, death and because of that, he refuses to leave Tess until they find her a safe place to hide.

After a convenience store clerk and two men see the wad of cash in Tess's purse when she opens it, Tess runs to her truck and dumps the purse and rushes for the rest room. When she gets back, the truck, her money and Justin Boyd are gone. Believing that Justin was just after her money in the first place, Tess is flabbergasted, alone, and broke.

Justin is mugged by the two men at the gas station and left for dead on the side of the road. Sinclair's goons catch up to Tess and return her to her abusive husband.

When Justin wakes up, he remembers Tess, what she means to him and that she must be alone without money or worse back with her husband. Justin checks out of the hospital to find Tess and save her.

Can Justin find Tess? If so, can he save her? How? What happens when Randall finds out Tess has been on the road with a man? Will Tess ever be safe and free? Will Justin ever be free of his ghosts?

The characters were wonderful. This book will make you feel a variety of emotions. Scenes are amusing, hot, sexy, intense, and dangerous. You will grin, grimace, hold your breath, cry, smile, grin and laugh. This is an all around fabulous read. I look forward to reading other books by this author. I can see why she was a Golden Heart finalist.
