Augustus: Emperor of Rome Part 2

Rome was born out of legend, and from that legend the destinies of two brothers were thought to have created a grand city that would, with the passage of time, change, grow and influence entire generations of Romans.

From Ancient Rome's humble beginnings, different races came together to stand as one and were influenced by other cultures such as the Greeks--this was evident in Roman life and architecture.

And great leaders would come and go, leave their mark on the Roman landscape, and with the changing of each era, a new way of thinking swept across the state. When Augustus became ruler, Rome was to take a step forward and become a great empire.

Antony would be a main threat to Augustus as he attempted to step into the role that Caesar left open--Antony wanted to rule and would go as far as the battle ground to consolidate his power.

After the death of Julius Caesar, the fate of Rome was left hanging. Augustus' adoption was being questioned and he required support in the political arena. By following his instincts and with careful strategic maneuvering he achieved these goals.

Antony defied a future emperor, and as the hare, had made an attempt to dash across the finish line, but Augustus was certainly the tortoise. Therefore the fall of Marc Antony was imminent when his army was crushed by the opposition.

Further down the track, Rome would see a new era in the political arena. Augustus had made up with Antony and along with Lepidus all three would join forces as triumvirs to oversee the governing of Rome (Second Triumvirate), and through this, this mighty powerhouse would crush its enemies.

With the passage of time, all would rule their own provinces, and although they were a force to be reckoned with, they would later disband. Lepidus was defeated on the battlefield by Augustus and so was Marc Antony in the war between Egypt and Rome. Soon after Marc Antony killed himself.

Augustus had achieved many great successes during his reign--a first citizen who ruled as an emperor, an emperor who had a vision in mind for Rome and it would consist of grand hopes for the empire.

Augustus' vision was to re-establish Rome as a mighty powerhouse by providing the state with a new face-lift for both the governing of Rome and Roman life. For example, building roads etc. modernized the city and Augustus also encouraged the flourishing of the arts, as he was a patron of great artists.
