Almost Hear You Sigh

Until I read the above quote I never noticed the resemblance between this song and “Beast Of Burden.” Although Keith is talking about how they are the same musically I think that they are thematically quite similar also. Both songs are about a guy who is in love with a woman who really doesn’t want him. A woman who is just using him.

In “Almost Hear You Sigh” the poor guy’s been left flat and he can’t believe it. He’s come to the realization that his love has been faking it all along. Thinking about it, he knows he should have seen it because of the “stone cold look ” in her eyes. The woman obviously had her own agenda.

The strange thing about both these songs is that they are very beautiful. One would think that songs about this kind of thing would be painful but these songs are anything but. “Almost Hear You Sigh” is like a wistful sigh even though the words express great pain. The singing is rather bland, very little emotion at all. Almost as if they’re felt by someone else. I wonder if Mr. Jagger has ever felt this way? From what can be read in the papers, he’s left more than one woman feeling disoriented and slightly used.

I’m sure a lot of you could argue with my little suppositions but it doesn’t really matter. I like the song even if it lacks the emotional punch it could have. What a song “means” is not as important as what it means to you.
