Angie

Angie Harmon
Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear?
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, Angie, you can't say we never tried
Angie, you're beautiful, yes, but ain't it time we said good-bye?
Angie, I still love ya, remember all those nights we cried?
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?

Oh, Angie, don't you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain't it time we said good-bye? Yeah

With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, I still love you, baby
Everywhere I look I see your eyes
There ain't a woman that comes close to you
Come on Baby, dry your eyes
But, Angie, Angie, ain't it good to be alive?
Angie, Angie, they can't say we never tried

Originally released on Goats Head Soup in 1973. “Angie” was one of the first songs the band recorded in Jamaica. The unexpected ballad reached the number one spot in the US and number two in the UK.

Angie Bowie has always claimed the song was for her. While it’s true that Angie and her then husband David Bowie were Mick’s friends, there is no proof that an affair took place. Mick has long since denied that Angie Bowie was the inspiration for one of the Stones’ most beautiful songs.

Many people have speculated that “Angie” was written for Marianne Faithfull. Mick ended his tumultuous relationship with Marianne in 1969. The couple’s troubles included a miscarriage, multiple drug busts and suicide attempts. No matter who Mick and Keith had in mind when they wrote the song, it stands out as one of the pair’s most beautiful and memorable songs.

The man in the song (Mick?) is trying to convince his lover that the relationship is over. It’s obvious that he doesn’t want to hurt her but he feels it is time for them to part. They just don’t love each other. Most people can relate to having dreams that “all go up in smoke”. Ending a relationship that has run it’s course is one of the hardest things to do. Maybe it is better to walk away before they end up hating each other.
