Will the Stones Still Rock In the 24th Century?Rock and Roll was the soundtrack for a whole generation. I find it rather odd that Star Trek left Rock out of its history. One might be tempted to say that this happened because Rock is about rebellion. Rebellion against authority, against the past, and in a sense, rebellion against a future young people can't relate to. Star Trek is not about people rebelling against authority. Rock is more than the music. It is an attitude. A philosophy. A fashion statement. I just can't see Wesley Crusher wearing a "Who the **** is Mick Jagger" t-shirt, but I can imagine Worf in Keith's leopard print duster. Maybe there's hope for the 24th Century yet. I think the Stones, in particular, are just too rebellious for the orderly Star Trek world. The only band I can think of that would be less suited for this mythology would be the Sex Pistols. I can hardly imagine Geordi singing the lewd lyrics of "Star Star" while working away in a Jefferies Tube. Though I would love to hear him explaining the lyrics to Data. Just once I'd like to have Riker walk into the Ready Room to hear "Sympathy For The Devil" playing at full blast. Out of character for Picard? Well, just think of it as a study of archeological artifacts - CDs maybe. After all, if you really want to know about a culture, you have to study its art - especially its music.
