Why I Love The Stones - Is It More Than Just A Sex Thing?

People have asked me why I like the Stones so much. I usually say "I like their music. It makes me happy." People don't get it. Why the Stones and not the Beatles? In truth I like some Beatles music. But to be blunt (those of you who are easily shocked will want to close your eyes and hit the down arrow on your keypad): the Beatles never got between my legs the way the Stones do.

I don't mean that literally. For me, their music resonates in a deeply personal erotic way that I've never experienced with any other rock band. When I was younger I didn't understand it. Now I know that at some point I was seduced by the dark side. I've loved every minute of it.

I've been told by male Stones fans that females don't like the Stones the way males do. They believe that most of the female interest is of the "do I want to fuck them?" variety. To be honest, I've had those thoughts. Had them about every Stone except Bill -- I could never stand him. But... that's not why I like them. Fantasizing about shagging rock stars is a harmless pass time but it would hardly keep me buying records. I certainly wouldn't be doing this page if that's all that interested me.

The very first Stones album I ever heard was Get Yer Ya Yas Out. The Stones were always around. I am one of those extraordinary people that Keith talks about who have never known a world without the Stones ("You got the Sun, the Moon, the air you breath and the Rolling Stones, we've just always been there").

It's gotten to the point that any emotion or situation I come in contact with has a corresponding Stones song. You know what I'm saying. For example: I've recently been in a situation that was very uncomfortable for me and I had no easy way out. I had to make a tough choice. At this time I pulled out my copy of Steel Wheels and played "Between A Rock and a Hard Place" over and over. There are other songs that would have suited the situation but I was drawn to that one. After listening to it a few times I felt better. I think that's what music is supposed to do. It's supposed to give you something you can related to so that you can feel better.
