If you’re an early riser, you can attend the “slack” for free. With so many entries into this great rodeo, not every cowboy or cowgirl gets to compete during the afternoon performances. The slack is the luck of the draw, and basically, anyone that is entered could be “drawn out of the hat” and have to compete at the early morning rodeos to get to the top of the pack on Finals Sunday. The slacks usually begin at 7:00 am, but check with CFD volunteers to verify before planning your morning. The exciting rodeo news is that CFD added Team Roping with a twist to their rodeo schedule. At CFD rodeo, cowboys roped muley cattle for some of the best rodeo entertainment around! “Muley” cattle are without horns and are a bit feistier and tend to get away pretty quickly across the large rodeo arena. This definitely made for an exciting timed event. 2001 CFD FINALS Steer Roping Trevore Brazile, Pueblo, CO, took the Steer Roping timed event by storm on Sunday with a time of 17.1, followed by Mark Milner, Elida, NM, at 20.0 seconds. Trevore wore the number “1” on his back, and that number turned into good luck for him. He also took the steer wrestling buckle home with times of 14.8, 15.0 combined with his Sunday total for a 46.9 average. Trevor was the 2000 CFD all-around champion, and although he entered the team roping and calf roping events, he didn’t collect checks in either so did not win the all-around title. Still Brazile collected a hefty CFD paycheck of $12,917 for steer roping. 2001 CFD FINALS Steer Wrestling Other contestants were eating Chad Biesemeyer’s dust on Sunday. The Stephenville, TX steer wrester laid down his steer in 7.6 seconds. Sammy Koenig, a fellow Texan from Cross Plains, TX, took second place clocking in at 9.1 seconds. Sammy’s times were good enough to put him in a shared second & third place time average with George Andrus of St. George, UT and two 27.5-second runs. First place average went to Ivan Teigen of Capital, MT and his 26.7 runs. Biesemeyer turned out with a 27.6 average and fourth place. Tiegen is past the 40-year-old mark and won $15,998 while wearing the buckle he won back in 1996. 2001 CFD FINALS Team Roping Frank Graves of Poplarville, MS and Monty Joe Petska of Turlock, CA both scored 9.2 in this timed event roping the tough and wiley muley steers, sharing the winnings for Sunday. Graves and Petska also tied for second in the average with combined times of 30.4. Interestingly enough, the buckle and money winner of the first ever Team Roping event in Cheyenne history culminated in a tie for first place also. Blair Burk, Durant, OK, and F Preston Williams, Casa Grande, AZ, shared the winnings with a 30.2 average time.
