Now, for some of the fun lingo, cowboys throw around...

AVERAGE -- The cowboy's points are combined from all go-rounds. The cowboy with the highest cumulative score or lowest total time wins the average (event).

BICYCLING -- Spurring with one foot and then the other, like riding a bike.

BREAKING THE BARRIER -- In timed events, steers and calves are given a head start. If a contestant rides through the rope barrier before it's release, he's said to have "broken the barrier" and assessed a ten-second penalty.

BUCKLE BUNNIES -- Rodeo groupies.

GO-ROUND -- One round of a multi-day contest.

GOLD BUCKLE -- Rodeo's gold medal or trophy.

HOOKER -- A bull that uses his horns to try to dump his rider.

MONEY HORSE -- The name given to a horse, when ridden, that usually takes the cowboy to the winner's circle.

RERIDE -- A cowboy gets a second chance on a different animal if the judges determine his stock didn't give the rider a fair chance (maybe by not bucking or if it stumbled or fell).

STOCK CONTRACTOR - The person or organization that provides livestock used in rodeo events.

UNION ANIMAL -- An animal that bucks until the 8-second whistle, and then quits.

And to wrap up lingo, the two most important traits a cowboy must have:

HEART -- The desire to win. A top cowboy has to have heart.

TRY -- Without guts and determination, a man would not be called a cowboy.
