The first thing you notice while scanning the back cover of Lennon’s CD 530 Saturday Morningis the title of the first track, Property of Goatf****cker. The song itself is great, a Korn/NIN slab of industrial rock, and contains no mention of barnyard animals. I suppose such a title, though, is an appropriate match for the track’s nuclear assault. Lennon, a 20-year-old Tennessee native, and her band opened for Monster Magnet and the Cult in 2001. What other female-fronted band could convincingly share the stage with those guys ? Courtney before her Hollywood make-over, perhaps?
Professing a sound that is two parts industrial, two parts hard rock, with an occasional soul-baring, slower-paced tune thrown in for good measure.Think Black Sabbath meets Fiona Apple. The album’s opening lyric is “Mommy’s in the closet finding God/I’m on my knees finding you” Woo! Pretty intense for a 20 year old. Take that, Xtina!
Lennon Murphy's personal story is the riot/rocker grrl version of Shania Twain’s “Party of Five” saga. When her Mom died of a heart attack (in the closet, as referenced above), she took custody of her little sister Mariella. Where that would have deterred a weaker person, Lennon took care of her sister and pursued her musical career without missing a step. The Hendersonville, TN native wrote her first song at 7, and was playing clubs by the time she entered her teens. Lennon was signed to Arista Records in 2000, with many big name boosters, including L.A. Reid, on her side. Despite this, the recording of her debut album encountered many snags, including the firing of it’s original, big-name producer.
In many ways, 5:30 Saturday Morning is the hardbitten twin sister to Jagged Little Pill or the too much too-soon sibling of Live Through This. Lennon’s lyrics are straight to the point and not as self-indulgent as many of the sentiments on those albums. One of the best cuts is the poignantly sad These Days about an woman who can’t wrest herself from an abusive relationship (Just One More Night and I’ll Leave). The haunting, Brake Of Your Car, sounds like PJ Harvey meets an industrial (but commercially accessible) wall of sound. Lennon recently left Arista, and is currently shopping around her new disc Good-Bye. Her tour dates for December are; 12/02/2002 Minneapolis MN Quest Club 12/03/2002 LaCross WI The Warehouse 12/05/2002 Lincoln NE Knickerbocker's 12/07/2002 Denver CO Blue Bird Theater 12/08/2002 Vail CO 8150 12/15/2002 Bakersfield CA Jerry's Pizza 12/16/2002 W.
