Two More Great Hard to Find Hard Rock CDs

Neurotic Outsiders - Self- Titled - Maverick

The more jaded scenesters out there dismissed this LP as a vanity project by a buncha bored rock stars and ignored it. They didn't miss out on great music, but they definitely missed out on a rockin' party. Back in '96 or so, John Taylor (Duran Duran), Duff Mackagan (GNR), Matt Sorum (GNR/Cult) and Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) were the Monday night house band at the Johnny Depp's Viper room. The gigs unexpectedly resulted in an eponymous album. Angelina an ode to the platinum blonde queen of Sunset Strip bilboards, and a particularly frenetic version of Janie Jones are the best cuts. Most of the CD is a good backdrop for just about any endeavor, but is not the center of attention. Rock reviewers refused to give it more than 2 and a half stars, even if the write-up indicated otherwise. Referring to the song Jerk, which begins with "You're a bitch/I'm a jerk", and continues to get randier in its language. A male English reviewer said it was rubbish. A female American reviewer opined, "You gotta love it." I say, to quote an audience member at my first Mentors show "What cultural significance!" Sometimes, though, you have to suspend disbelief and just have a good time. When the record company releases a special "clean" version of a song, you know you're on the right track. Since Steve wrote most of the songs and not JT, this is what you get.|

Steve Jones - Fire and Gasoline - Import

One of the undiscovered gems of the late 1980s hard rock scene....The music is undeniably tight and well-played. Steve can't sing, however - he sorta growls his way through. Everybody from Mickey Curry, Billy Duffy, Axl and Ian Astbury assisted. Sure, its really dated now...umm, unless you updated it to a rap format then it would sell millions, but that's another story. Songs run the gamut, a veritable taste test of the genre - cycles (Wild Wheels), nasty sex (Leave Your Shoes On), unbelievably heinous stalker chick (Troublemaker), bad boys (We're No Saints), amped up David Bowie cover (Sufferegate City), remake of Sex Pistols song (I Did You No Wrong, featuring Axl Rose on vocals), attempt at social commentary (God In Louisiana). Where was this CD when everybody else was listening to Poison and Winger?
