Rob Zombie's Horror Metal With A Twist
White Zombie, a rag-tag, white trash culture lovin' group of New York based musicians, released a few records on independent label Caroline before hitting it big with Thunderkiss 65 in 1993, courtesy of Beavis and Butthead and Headbangers Ball. The band was never more than a mid-range success in status-y rock stardom terms. Rob Cummings and his girlfriend Shauna Reynolds (aka Rob Zombie and Sean Yseult) formed White Zombie in 1985, naming their new creation after the classic Bela Lugosi horror film. It's interesting to note that one of Rob's day jobs, during this time included a stint as a production assistant for PeeWee's Playhouse. After releasing a few CDs on Caroline Records, the band parlayed its kitschy looks, thundering guitars, and provocative/scary/tasteless lyrics into a contract with Geffen Records. La Sexorcisto:Devil Music, Vol. 1 provided the post-grunge world with a tongue in cheek, heavy brand of sleaze rock that paid homage to grade C horror flicks, muscle cars, and all sorts of stomping, white trash fun. The trend continued to a lesser degree on Astro-Creep 2000 the 1995 effort that contained the relentlessly catchy More Human than Human. Rob also produced a song for the Howard Stern movie Private Parts shotrly after Astro-Creep was released, and performed onstage with Howard at the premiere of the flick. Hellbilly Deluxe, the 1998 solo album, climbed up the charts and effectively put an end to White Zombie, as Rob's first solo tour pulled out all stops (dancing robots, dancing girls, a guitar filled with -er-pig's blood, giant screens showing clips from horror movies). Oh yes, and Rob traisping around the stage like a demented extra from Dawn of the Dead. The multitalented Mr. Zombie, perhaps employing some of the skills he honed as an art production manager for a porno mag, has ventured into animation. The memorable hallucination sequence in the Beavis and Butthead Do America. His much-anticipated flick Land of 1,000 Corpses, deemed too "disturbing" to be released by a major studio is slated for release - at some point. Rob is currently on tour with Ozzy as part of the "Merry Mayhem" tour. The shows are slated through the end of the year.
