The other day a friend and I got into an argument over the origin of the guitar riffs in the the Scorpions' Lovin' You Sunday Morning "That's Rudy on guitar!" " No, its Michael Schenker you're such an idiot listen to that riff...its Michael I tell ya." In the world of rock n roll brothers, the world has long neglected Rudy and Michael Schenker. Rudy we'll get to later, but Michael came to prominence with UFO....an arena rock English band of the 70s even though they released albums in the 80s and 90s attracted little attention outside of their hardcore following. UFO consisted of Schenker on guitar, vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, drummer Andy Parker and keyboardist Paul Raymond.
If truly a band was known for their music it was UFO.(The slight whispers of Schenker's battles with alcohol notwithstanding.) No stellar personalities here, just the crisp but bludeoning guitar riffs of Mssr. Schenker and the tightly written and produced songs (penned by Mogg/Schenker) that propelled the band to rock radio god status in the 70s. but they'll never be mentioned on that 70s show....although rarely mentioned in the mainstream rock press, Schenker was quite the guitar hero in the mid 70s specially among Midwestern kids. Occasionally you still hear Doctor,Doctor. and Rock Bottom on classic rock stations. Playing midsized venues through the late 70s the band produced classic guitar rock albums such as the infamous lights out the live double album Strangers In The Night and the long overlooked Phenomenon, No Heavy Petting (a great album, a bit slower paced and bluesy, out of print in the US) and Force It, complete with the mysterious Hipnosis album covers. although none of them were banned just weird. Monkey with an IV connected to a woman's neck. Hmmm.... Basically, any album released on Chrysalis before 1981 will do nicely. After 1978's Obsession, the band's studio albums decreased in quality and Schenker left the band in 1980 to form his own group He also joined his brothers group the Scorpions for a few albums, notably Lovedrive. The band's 1979 live album Strangers in the Night is a treat for any hard rock fan. Guitarist Pete Way left to form Fastway with Philthy Animal Taylor of Motorhead fame. they had one hit say what you will... in 1979. Original band members and carried on with other guitarists without much luck, Schenker rejoined them in and they have played shows around the US,, Go To Page: 1 2
