Faster Pussycat- Ten Years Later

Well, well, well, upon comparing pictures of 2 former/current hair bands, I thought aaah....is this a mistake? Are these the same guys? And them I remember the hard rock/metal section of Record Explosion on NYC's Fifth Avenue, where I wasted err..researched away many lunch hours in 1989-91. Its hard to fathom it now, but there were a limitless number of hair bands in the late 80s. When MTV had a "Lets Rock Again" special, that aired in 97 or 98, I cracked after a few hours of retro hair band clips, and opted for the Discovery Channel as a replacement. There were just too many hair bands at the end of the era...once you got down to Thunder and Firehouse, the music and presentation were tepid, to say the least. Once, a co-worker and I were able to name 30 hair bands and we could have gone on with the list, but then our supervisor showed up with her disco records......Anyhow, here's the rundown on Faster Pussycat, a band from back in the day who are making a "comeback of sorts.

Faster, Pussycat -well, any band named after a Russ Meyer movie can't be all bad-can they? Ensconced in between multiplatinum 80s glammers like Poison/Motley Crue and te genre bands that copied their predecessors, Faster Pussycat's first, self-titled was Hollywood in 1987, and their second CD, Wake Me When Its Over released in 1989. Contained the hits Where There's A Whip, There's A Way and House of Pain. Gosh, I wonder if those guys had any hobbies? I wonder what they could be? Another CD, Whipped, was released in 1992, but by then it was too late. Grunge had taken over. Fear not, though, the band has just released an album of remixes Between the Valley of the Ultra-Pussy, and they've embarked a short North American tour, and they are also playing a few dates in Japan and the UK. Singer Taime Downe is official rock DJ at the Pretty Ugly Club in Hollywood. Taime also fronts another band, the Newlydeads, who can best be described as glam-goth, sort of a Marilyn Manson, Jr. Former Pussycat Brent Muscat is now in the band Bubble with Share (formerly of Vixen.). Bubble's song Sparkle Star won this year's John Lennon Songwriting Competition.

L.A. Guns, another Sunset Strip fave from back in day, are also making a comeback with their new CD Man In The Moon. Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis man the helm again on songs such as Hypnotized, Scream, and Spider's Web. The CD was engineered and produced by fellow Spitfire artist Gilby Clark. L.A. residents should note that Tracii and Gilby perform every Thursday night at the Cat Club on Sunset with the Starf***ers (you can fill in the asterisks yourself) along with Slim Jim Phantom.
