The dearth of hard rock music on big market radio is only broken by classic hard rock stations, which for the most part play Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC and Zepplin (with an occasional dollop of Kiss, and always
Rock 'N'Roll All Nite). Webradio provides almost all of the pertinent fodder for rockers.
Headbangers in the New York City area, however, have a great alternative to such run of the mill programming.
Saturday Night Rocks on venerable NYC station WNEW-FM (102.7 FM),rattles the airwaves. On air since 1998,
Saturday Night Rocks was the only music show on the station to survive a format change to all-talk. From 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Saturday night (sometimes the show starts later in the fall/winter due to college football broadcasts), Eddie chooses from an array of metal/glam/hard rock bands, featuring groups that haven't been played elsewhere on the radio in years, like TT Quick, Kix, Kings X, and Montrose.
It's great to listen to an intelligent radio guy whose also a fan,who doesn't trade on rumors, gossip or speculation. There are some fine moments here, how about Snake, Rachel from Skid Row and Dave from Monster Magnet calls in and they spend like ten minutes discussing clubs in jersey. It's like having beers w/ 'em at a bar, its not like listening to a formal interview where you can hear the publicist breathing in the background.
Ace Frehley is on a lot, and Sebastian Bach was there to play his favorite songs one night.Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson and Gene Simmons are other recent guests. Every show ends with a representative of that much maligned musical form, the metal power "ballad".(C'mon, you know you secretly love Every Rose Has Its Thorn.)
Saturday Night Rocks provides a great reason to stay home at home on a Saturday night, with a cold beer and a blaring radio.
