A Rundown of the Most Rockin' Sites On The WebOnce upon a time, there were only a handful of places to find out about your favorite bands. Rolling Stone magazine, print version, and your local hip rock station. Post WWW, however, now rock fans have the opposite problem - there's too much information out there. It's possible to whittle away your lunch hour surfing just one of the music mega-sites out there. While all of them will give you the basics, some of them provide a wilder ride than others. Witness the following: Artistdirect - The easiest to navigate, and chock full of information. Their message boards cover every band/artist you could possibly imagine, and the daily news listings features news and interviews culled from all of the smaller sites out there. Antimusic - for metal and alternative dudes and dudettes. Don't look for reports on the (ex) Spice Girls here. A special section (F.U.C.U. - File Under Cool and Underrated) is devoted to lesser-known bands VH-1 - The hippest and most humorous music site. They aren't afraid to diss people (in a loving tongue in cheek way, of course). Complete listings of the TV fare, as well as columns like "The Modern Humorist" and Mikki Halprin's column, which has recently dealt with the hypnotic attraction of the new Britney Spears/Pepsi commercial and Madonna's (supposed) effect on the outcome of last year's presidential election. These "personality" driven columns are a much needed respite from the all news and gossip tidbit format of most of the other sites. Their "Fan Clubs" are devoted to mainstream artists from Mariah Carey to Pearl Jam to Aerosmith, and combine more info about some artists than you'll find on their official websites. A site devoted exclusively to hardcore metal groups is based, not surprisingly,in England. Totalrock.com - A complete metal site, with their own radio station and webcast. Interviews and news feature bands such as Venom, Cradle of Filth, as well as the usual suspects. Hardradio by far eclipses the rest of the sites. Although a bit hard to navigate and brownish bland in design, the site is filled with facts, factoids, audio, chat, and will soon include videos of every band you can think of (and some you never have). If you do not discover a band or song that wasn't in your personal encyclopedia prior to your visit, you need to take off the headphones for awhile. There is that much stuff here. For those headbangers old enough to remember, Hardradio is the offshoot of the late and revered Z-Rock.
