Lucid Nation - Suburban Legends - Brain Floss Records

Suburban Legends is the newest CD from multi-talented Los Angeles punk band Lucid Nation. In addition to fronting an acclaimed band, vocalist Tamara Spivey is also an accomplished artist. Her work is currently featured on Candelier, France's cyber art gallery. The guitarist, Ronnie Pontiac, has fashioned graphic images that are used in some schools to complement the study of "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Lucid Nation walk the walk and talk the talk. They have participated in real benefits, such as events for FARM, RAINN, and Food, Not Bombs, instead of merely singing about causes. They change members, they improvise, they've opened for Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, John Sinclair, UXA and other alternative/punk bands. Lucid Nation had their beginnings at the apex of the riot grrl movement, and emerged as the only major L.A. representative of that genre. After many years of a fruitful but revolving door membership, the band seems to have settled with its current incarnation, with Spivey on vocals, guitar and bass, Pontiac on guitar, Danette Lee (formerly of White Trash Debutantes) also on guitar, Grit Maldonado (bass, former member of Girl Jesus) and Tia Sprocket (drums, she has performed with Raging Slab and Joan Jett)

Lucid Nation's sound combines Rid of Me era P.J. Harvey with wry spoken lyrics/prose poems reminescent of Patti Smith. The tone is angry, humorous, literate, sarcastic. Suburban Legends tackles a variety of subjects, from the plastic appeal of Las Vegas to the politics of being in an all-girl band to poseur punk rockers. A far cry from the homogenized pop/punk currently flooding the airwaves, Lucid Nation seethes with gritty images and dissonent guitars.
