Billy Idol-Devil's Playground

It takes a while to warm up to the songs on Devil's Playground as there's a natural inclination to compare the songs Idol's mega-hits from the '80s.. Once you get over that, Devil's Playground is a welcome addition to any hard rock aficionado's collection. The band is tight and consistent and plays with emotion as well as technical expertise.(Stephen McGrath on bass, Brian Tichy on drums, Stevens on guitar; with keyboard work by Derek Sherinian, a former member of Dream Theatre who has toured with Kiss and Alice Cooper.

Idol has matured in the sense that the screaming, sneering rockers are interspersed with comedy and even a twinge of country western on Lady Do Or Die Instead of coming across as random assortment of styles, the songs gel well together. Idol doesn't need to try to sound modern or radically different than he's sounded before to prove he's worthy of attention in 2005. He's fine as himself. And we need that sexy, edgy sneer now more than ever.
