Depswa - Two Angels And A Dream

Formed in Modesto, California in the mid- 1990s, a band called Carcinogen played the sort of raw, anger-filled, for males only rock music so in vogue at the time. After all, once grunge faded away, something had to fulfil the rock's "next big sound" mantel. Carcinogen's guitarist - singer Jeremy Penick and bandmates acquired a hard-hitting reputation with fans in northern California, and it wasn't long before the band had relocated to L.A.and opened for the likes of brand name acts like Disturbed. As time moved on and the band matured, however, Penick's vocal and songwriting style had outgrown the macho posing of many of their contemporaries and soon the band's name was changed to the more mystic and appropriate- Depswa, which is Swahili for "behind the moon." Fast forward to 2003 - Depswa's first full-length CD Two Angels And A Dream is released by Geffen Records. Fresh off a successful tour with Mudvayne, and a step away from a trek with Ozzfest, their new release is the latest triumph in a banner year for the young band.

Penick's strong and melodic vocals mesh powerfully with the clear as a bell guitar playing of Dan Noonan and James Mills. Although the band keeps the mosh pit energy going on tracks like Let It Go and Not Responsible without sacrificing musical integrity and resorting to cheap, overbearing tactics or messy playing. Even the softer tracks emit a sincerity rarely heard in this type of release, as on the deftly rendered Prom Song. The lyrics that accompany this hard rock waltz transcend the "baby, baby" sentiments that many bands throw on a CD for their token love song.

In many ways, Depswa is similar to another young break-through band, Evanescene, in the sense that both groups command attention with intelligent, stark lyrics, full-bodied musical presentation and a straightforward emotional honesty. Neither band caricatures the attitudes of the late teens/early twenties set, but represents them openly and without any le dernier cri or preconceived industry notion.
