For Retailers: Educating Customers on Choosing Better ItemsMany customers will shop until they drop for the perfect sweater, pair of trousers, pair of shoes, etc. What exactly makes a garment good value for a customer? Before you sell anther item to a customer, please share the following tips with your associates who in turn can help customers make educated shopping decisions. This will drive your business forward! 1. Recognize the feel of the garment. Is the fabric appealing to the touch or is it stiff, course, and itchy? If the fabric is uncomfortable when worn, then the customer will be dissatisfied with the item. 2. Take a moment to try on the item. The customer must make sure that the item feels right on their body and doesn’t lay awkwardly. If it does, the manufacturer probably probably skimped on the fabric. 3. Look at the quality of the trimmings. If a button is plastic rather than pearl, it will be much more likely to crack and break. Pearl also adds quality. The zipper should zip with ease. Also, associates should point out embroideries and topstitching that adds value to an item. 4. Check the seams. Check to make sure that the seams are reinforced. This way the customer can be sure that the seams will not give away to a little stress. Also use this time to recognize pattern match ups. When the item is buttoned or zipped, the pattern should line up exactly. 5. Make sure sizing is consistent. If your customer shops a particular brand, have them to ensure that the same size fits them in every item. 6. Educate your customers about cleaning. Customers don’t like surprises, so tell them if hand washing or dry cleaning is needed. This adds extra expense to them. LAST BUT NOT LEAST 7. Tell them how the item looks. Most customers want a frank answer on how the item looks on them.. Don’t be afraid to tell them the truth. They will appreciate you for it and will probably return to shop again. Use these tips and you are well onto your way of educating your customers on how to pick quality merchandise and not to mention you will develop a reputation as being knowledgeable. This always helps in retail!
