Getting Prepared for Inventory

The spring season is usually “inventory time” for most retail enterprises. This is often a time consuming and nerve wrecking experience for management and associates. Because of this, I want to address this topic briefly. When preparing for and conducting inventory, it is important to keep some simple procedures in mind. Follow these procedures and every store should be on the way to a successful inventory.

1. Create and Conduct Inventory Training Classes. There may be some associates in your store that are new and are not sure what they must do to make the inventory as successful as possible. Take the time to prepare a short course on inventory. Develop a plan that covers everything from preparation for to completion of the inventory. This time invested will be well worth it in the time saved once inventory preparation has begun.

2. Clean and organize stockrooms, hold areas, and terminal stands.

3. Separate retail and non-retail merchandise to avoid confusion.

4. Be sure to mark non-retail merchandise as do not inventory.

5. Try to get as much merchandise on the selling floor as possible before inventory

6. Check areas like the receiving dock, visual merchandising, beneath tables, storage bins, employee break areas, etc. If any merchandise is found, put them in their proper area.

7. Prep merchandise to ensure that each one has a scannable ticket.

8. Conduct ticket audits throughout the store. This means associates should physically look at all items to make sure a scannable ticket is present.

9. If items are sold individually but are nested together. Separate them to ensure and accurate count.

10. Review display merchandise and make sure a scannable ticket is present.

11. Make sure all customer returns are properly marked and accounted for.

These are just a few points to remember when conducting inventories. If you choose to have a inventory class, it should address each of these points and go into more detail on how to accomplish them effectively. Happy counting!
