To continue our interview with different poets about what inspires them, in hopes of inspiring you to write your own poetry, we begin with Jo Murphy of Action Kid's Art
Activities and
Family
Dysfunction.
Me: "What first inspired you to write poetry?" Jo: "I write music and paint pictures and the two kinda mix together to make poetry of a kind. I think I am forever trying to make learning fun for the kids I teach and so I do a kinda 'Cat In The Hat' type poetry mix for them to make some of their learning tasks fun. I also use music to help switch the kids minds over from left brained activities such as Maths through to Artistic activities like Art. I use music to do this..... it is very much a way of teaching the kids learning styles in the manner of 'Six Thinking Hats.' de Bono And so rhythm is important to me. I often give the kids guided imagery and play Baroque music while I talk them through. I then reduce the music to simply percussion on the strings of the guitar. This stage is followed by drawing pictures and that is when I break into free form poetry with them to help them form images in their minds. I guess doing this on a daily basis has made me able to break into poetry very easily so we often make up poems and songs on the way to the art room and in spare time etc. Me: ""Is there some kind of ritual or technique that you use before writing a poem?" Jo: "So I guess it stands to reason that when I write more serious work here in the studio I go through similar rituals myself. I light a candle and meditate and pray and then use music and percussion to become centered and ready. I often intersperse poetry into the stories I write and so I am well into a creative trance before the poetry begins....." Me: "Would you mind sharing some of your work? "You should see Where I have been, It's been like living in a dream! Together with friends Been making the biggest scene, That you can imagine! I've been with mates out by the coast, There the kind of buddies About which you would boast, I really treasure their friendship the most Do you appreciate your friendships?
This is a very good idea presented by Jo Murphy. People sometimes have to feel comfortable and relaxed to let the inspiration flow. If this does not work for you, try something like the recommendations of writer-at-large Luciano Pimentel
