Famous Poet: Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Thanks for the insight in my poll about your favorite poet! So far, Emily Dickinson seems to be in the lead and therefore here is a reward to those who voted. This month Emily Dickinson is our *Poet of the Month*. Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she spent most of her life. Emily Dickinson wrote more than 1800 poems, only 10 were published in her lifetime. As a result of Emily Dickinson's life of solitude, she was able to focus on her world more sharply than other authors of her time - contemporary authors who had no effect on her writing. Emily was original and innovative in her poetry, most often drawing on the Bible, classical mythology, and Shakespeare for allusions and references.

The Soul unto itself
Is an imperial friend --
Or the most agonizing Spy --
An Enemy -- could send --

Secure against its own --
No treason it can fear --
f -- its Sovereign -- of itself
Soul should stand in Awe --
by: Emily Dickinson

This is one of my favorite poems written by Emily Dickinson. A few of her other good ones are "Because Death Could Not.." and "I Cannot Live With You". I would recommend Emily Dickinson to anyone who loves poetry.
