Here's what you do:

1. Get a copy of Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File, to use as a worksheet to figure out if you owe any taxes for 2000, and if so, how much. (You can either print a copy from your tax software program, download and print it from the web or ask the IRS to fas you a copy by calling (703) 368-9694 item #13141. 2. Next, figure out your best estimate of your 2000 taxes due by filling out Form 4868 through line 6. 3. Call (888) 796-1074 on or before April 16th. Make sure you have your 1999 tax forms handy. The IRS will need some numbers from them to make sure it's you that's calling. 4. Follow the instructions you'll get over the phone. 5. At the end of the call, they will give you a confirmation number to let your know that your extension request has been accepted. Write this number down on your Form 4868 and file it with your tax records. Don't send the form to the IRS!

Remember that an extension doesn't give you more time to pay your taxes. You still have to pay on time. It just lets you file your paperwork later.

You may pay your taxes using your MasterCard, Discover or American Express by phone or over the internet. (Your credit card company will probably charge you a convenience fee, but the IRS won't.)

- PhoneCharge, Inc., 1-888-ALLTAXX (1-888-255-8299), or online at http://www.About1888ALLTAXX.com

- Official Payments Corporation, 1-800-2PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829), or online at http://www.officialpayments.com

After you've finished your taxes, it's time to start organizing for next year. This way, the taxes won't be as painful the next time around.
