Getting a Web Site

If you're reading this article, you have Internet and web access. You might do a little web surfing, send and receive email. As a visual artist, you should also have the web work for you by creating a web portfolio. If you already have one, good for you! You're way ahead of the game.

Getting Started Your Internet service provider (ISP) might provide free web storage space for your web site on their server. If they don't, there are plenty of free web space providers. Most of them make your visitors look at pop-up and banner ads, but that's how you end up getting the space free.

The following is a list of free web site providers. I haven't thoroughly researched each one, mind you. But I did check each site and these offer the most advantages.

http://www.bgt5.com (100 megs of space with some free bells and whistles to help build your site)

http://www.peyros.com (100 megs of space, unlimited bandwidth, etc.)

http://topcities.com (150 megs, unlimited bandwidth, FTP access, etc.)

http://www.50megs.com (50 megs, FTP access, etc.)

http://123banners.net (unlimited space, choose your type of ad, etc.)

http://www.Netcolony.com (100 megs, web tools, etc.)

http://www.esmartstart.com (100 megs, FTP access, unlimited email addresses, etc.)

Registering a Domain Name Most of your web space providers should give you a subdomain (e.g. http://www.geocities/cathead.com). If you must have your own domain name, you can do that as well. First make sure that the URL isn't taken yet (you can do that by checking at http://www.networksolutions.com). If it isn't, you're in luck!

The going rate is about $70 for 2 years, but you can find it for a lot cheaper since the Network Solution's monopoly got broken up. Just shop around. Now that they've opened up some new options (e.g. .tv, .biz, .name), you should be able to get something you like.

After you've worked out the technical aspects, you can begin actually designing your web site. That's the next article.
