The Internet as an Artist Resource

If you're reading this article, you're probably plugged into the internet, can navigate the web, and at least have your own email address. But how can use the conveniences of technology to further your career. The following are some ways you can use the internet for your own benefit.

Email You probably use email regularly to send messages to your friends and family, so you know how convenient and useful it is. Sending email can be a way to increase your arts network, to contact galleries and curators, and send announcements for upcoming exhibitions and events.

Not only is email a fast and convenient way to communicate, but it's also free. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for mailings for shows, or to announce your latest work. Use email as a tool.

Web Portfolio Whether you're a painter, photographer, or mixed media artist. It helps to have a web portfolio. Not only is it a great way to reach an international audience, but it gives people immediate access to your work. If you can't afford to get your own URL and web hosting package, there are plenty of free web space available.

Unless you're touting your web design skills, your web portfolio doesn't have to be a dazzling display of your html prowess. What it should do is show clear representations of your work, provide a bio and exhibition history, and list contact information. By no means is a web site a substitute for your physical portfolio. It should act as a supplement for it.

Free Marketing Think about the internet as a venue to market your skills and talents as an artist. Besides having a web portfolio, you can have your art seen by hundreds, even thousands of people on other sites.

Your art can be seen in the form of illustrations, animated GIFs, or even e-postcards. You may not necessarily get paid for it, but work out a deal where you can get links to your web site or other ways you can get your name out there.

Internet Resources If you're looking for grants, exhibit opportunities, or even openings around town, you can't beat the web for the speed of its information. Sign up for artists' mailing lists to keep up with the art scene in your town. Meet other artists around the world. The possibilities are endless. All you have to do is use your imagination and that should come naturally!
