Clinton Retrospective

What will the words say over the entrance to the Clinton Presidential library? Should he borrow from Nixon's motto; "If I'd Only Had The Nerve!" Maybe Gerald Ford will lend his ditty: "30 days has September, April, June and Richard Nixon's Pardon. George Bush's would be very economical: "April Who?"

How do we present the contributions of a person's life or their term in office? Can we group them all together and apply absolute and final judgments? Do I wish that he had not disgraced his office with his immaturity? Of course I wish that a year of his tenure could had been filled with more productive activities. Being faithfully married for 31 years, I must admit that I was morally offended by his sexual mores and subsequent lies. I am prepared to say that he was wrong and I will never be able to separate the accomplishments of his Presidency from his lying to the American people. My earlier references to former presidents is designed to establish a context, but never to say: "well they all do it therefore his behavior becomes relatively acceptable."

Politically, I have never been happy with the "New Democratic Party" and their social agenda. I guess I still believe in the goals of Hubert Humphrey, Michael Harrington and other "people-firsters."
