Did you catch Steve Forbes' speech to the Christian Coalition's "Road to Victory" convention in Atlanta?(9/14/98) He appeared to be priming himself for the 2000 election.[ Forbes 2000- The Online National Headquarters- http://www.forbes2000.com/cgi-bin/fy2k_p... ]
Despite achieving the apogee of dull during the 1996 primaries, Mr. Forbes employed the Atlanta podium as the genesis of his "repackaging" program. Stopping several times to acknowledge the enthusiastic ovations, the undeclared candidate changed from simply a flat tax proponent to being "flat out against abortion."[ Steve Forbes on the Stump (the flat tax) http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/election/... ] The word from anonymous sources inside the "beltway" was that Mr. Forbes was scheduled to be the keynoter at next month's Flat Earth Society's convention in Columbus Ohio. After all, they reckon to be a key voting bloc in several flat states up for grabs in 2000. Now before you accuse me of being a "doubting Thomas," Forbes' unique blending of economics and theology was very impressive. His new 'Divine-Side approach' was evident in his conclusion that the very location of the Messiah's birth was the consequence of an unfair tax system. His assertion that Congress' failure to eliminate the tax code's marriage penalty was a major cause of the social malaise was brilliant. Highly placed, unreliable sources report that Pat Buchanan, fearful of Forbes' New Right Strategy, was considering a blockbuster expose designed to weaken the billionaires' credibility with religious conservatives. The CNN special would have alleged that Forbes and Phyliss Shafly conspired to release a report naming Eve as the "mother of economic hardship" and therefore the precursor of the modern welfare state. My sources reveal that it is not simply a coincidence that Ralph Reed made this convention his last. The Executive Director is about to become a paid political consultant. Furthermore, that he is all but signed, sealed and delivered to the Forbes' camp. Apparently, secret strategy sessions have already begun. One is tempted to wonder how this team will cope with the recent research finding at it was not the vote of suburban, white women that won the election for Bill Clinton. Instead, it was the vote of women of color and cultural diversity that returned the incumbent to office. Will the Disney Corporation, eager to heal the wounds from their battle with the Southern Baptist Convention, offer to produce the film version of "Rich Men Can't Jump?" While every citizen is free to change his/her values, I cannot escape my recollections of Mr. Forbes' positions expressed during the 1996 Republican primaries. Is this the same man who enraged the Christian Coalition when he asserted that they did not represent the views of most Christians? Has Mr. Forbes found the Right's values appealing or he is simply appealing to the Right?
