The greatest stresses from any move come from a seemingly unending series of decisions. Don't be overwhelmed. Break the process into blocks of managed time and functions. Use this simple timeline as a guide, or access more in depth timelines from the suggested websites I have posted on the right.
Moving? You've just found out...Contact a real estate agent, start looking for a new town...talk to your family (and children). Eight Weeks to go List all that need to be notified about your move...clean out junk from perimeter areas of house...tighten up contacts with real estate agents...get estimates from movers...use this website to access truck rental companies... Six Weeks to go Based on your time and cost parameters, chose moving company or reserve rental truck....continue cleaning out attic, basement, etc....new home should be chosen by now...inform insurance agencies...send out change of address notices... Four Weeks to go Yard sale to weed out more?...start packing...show family pictures or actual new home...discuss new rooms with children...close out medical records and collect...clear your schedule to make room for family concerns... Two Weeks to go All household items not going should be gone...notify elestric/ gas companies...notify bank of transfer....check on plane tickets/ have car serviced....check with rental agent/ real estate agent, new home all set? One Week to go Clear the decks...do all little errands now (yard care, prescriptions, video rentals, library books, last visits... One Day to go Talk to family...busy days to come...have kids pick few special items to have...select valuables and papers to remain with you...call movers/ truck rental to confirm dates...defrost freezer & fridge....get rid of gas & propane....collect keys, tickets, checkbooks... Moving Day Up early...commit to being home for the movers, or to load the truck....walk through after house is empty as final check...talk to neighbors, friends and family....say goodbye.
