Let One Thing Go

Oct 23, 2001 - © Julie J. Murelle

So how does one who checks, attempt to relive the stress of checking? I had a therapist, a couple of years ago, who made a very interesting suggestion. He told me to let go of one of the things that I check. Take just one of those things you check and see if it helps to assign it to somebody else. So I assigned the front door to my husband. It was his job to check that. And it was interesting, by letting go of one of my things, I really felt less stressed. Now this does not mean ignoring responsibilities or going into denial, it just means that for the day or what ever set time, that one small thing is not yours to worry about.

So, I figured that if taking one stress away from myself was helping, that to add one positive accomplishment a day would make me feel even better. I made a list of all the things that I needed to get done overall. I am not talking about the basics, but I am talking nagging projects. Letters to be written, calls to be made, errands to run and little additional tasks that need to be scheduled into your life, (such as changing your license plates on your car or painting your house). I began to choose one thing each day. It could be as easy as writing a letter or as hard as cleaning the garage. What ever I felt that I could handle extra that day. Guess what, by doing one thing a day and not letting the world crush me, I released tons of stress and I was amazed by what I could get done with this method. It actually gave me balance, confidence and rest.

Try this equation, Let one thing go + One project done = less stress. Give it a try!
