How To Handle Life's Stresses, One Dog Pile At A Time

Oct 16, 2001 - © Julie J. Murelle

I made coffee, then fortified with said coffee and with a strength that came from the land of your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine, I got cleaning supplies and I went to the first pile. Concentrating on only that pile, I began to clean. I was careful not to look at the whole overwhelming mess, I just focused on the spot before me. As I finished, the one area, I congratulated myself and went on to the next pile as if it was a fresh new problem, instead of part of a big disgusting mess. In this way, I cleaned up the entire mess. Taking the mess in small portions and just concentrating on bits of it rather than letting it overwhelm me was how I got through this horror.

Stress and life's problems are much like a room filled with dog barf. When there is so much of it all together all at once they can overwhelm and debilitate. Take the stresses du jour or a room full of dog goo and look at it as a series of small separate problems. Handle the parts one at a time and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Focus on the problem immediately before you. Take it as an entity unto itself, instead of part of a major mess and you can accomplish great things, (such as getting thru the day).

The problems going on in our world today can be compared to having to clean a house full of dog puke. Terrorists, anthrax, bombings, the list goes on and on. What will happen to all of us? My advice is to take a deep breath, look at your life and say, "What piles can I clean up today?" Then begin. Pick up the kids toys. Congratulate yourself, make some food, pay those bills, take a half hour to ponder what is going on, then try to focus on something else a little more mundane. Soon you will be functioning in a time of great stress, pile by pile.

I wish all of you that special strength from the land-of-I-don't-know-where!
