It Takes A Villiage to Lower A Child's Stress

Here's what I did when she was done speaking with her auntie. I got out a book called how are you feeling (Which actually was my child's idea) so that she could choose which face she was feeling like and then I taught her some yoga. It helped. She calmed down. As I have discussed, I have had a lot of stress and hardship. I have two children who I want to have that happy carefree childhood. So when we have received life's little foibles, I have come up with some ways to help my kids.

1. No matter what the situation, there must be time for play. Even if it is a half hour of creative, fun, it must happen.

2. Next any books that are written for children on whatever the problem at hand,I feel these are a good investment. Even if you don't know how to explain the divorce or death, there are great books out there, written especially for children, in language they will understand. Also, the books can help to get communication open and get their feelings out.

3. Talk and listen to your children. I can not stress this enough. Kids know more than you think that they do and whatever their concerns and worries are, it would be much better if you address them and know what they are.

4. Let your kids know how special they are and how much you love them. Be careful how you talk to them.

5. Take them on walks.

6. Teach them the tools to help them to deal with their feelings.

7. Encourage exercise and a good nights sleep.

8. Most of all, if your child knows that you feel that their feelings are important and that you are there to listen and to give them the tools to get through the hard times, this will help them most of all. For fun with your child, check out the Tickle Elmo site (www.sesameworkshop.org/sesamestreet/tickle/) and Nick jr. (www.nickjr.com)

Be a child's hero and help to raise a world of adults who will do the same in kind.
