Making a Pamper Drawer

Jul 24, 2001 - © Julie J. Murelle

A tranquil stream pitter-patters in the background. (I am referring to a lovely fountain, hopefully not a leaky toilet.) There is the fresh smell of flowers in the air. The soft strumming of a guitar is being played as though just to serenade you, as you lie in the tub reading a favorite novel and all your cares and troubles begin to pop and float away like the bubbles in your tub. Well, it could happen....no, it must happen or something like this because pampering yourself is key to letting go of the stresses of the day.

Now when I say to pamper yourself, I am not referring to diapers and if this is the first thing to pop into your head, you may need to do this more than ever.

You can pamper yourself in many ways. In the book Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach, there is a reading on having a comfort drawer. If you own a copy, check out March 7th. This is a wonderful peace filled book, filled with lovely thoughts and ideas to help you cope and deal with life's little mishaps and struggles.

You clear out one of your dresser drawers and when you are out shopping and you see something that you know will help you to un-stress you purchase it and put it in your own special drawer. It is also suggested that you wrap each of these special items in wonderful paper and bows. There are two reasons for this. On if you ever need a present quick, you have one all wrapped up and ready to go in a moments notice and secondly, when you are treating yourself it is fun to unwrap a special something just for you! (Really now, who deserves a gift more than you?)

In the same article it is suggested that "...when outfitting you comfort drawer, be sure to line it with a lovely floral shelf paper and tuck in some scented sachets so that the drawer will delight your senses." Hence forth, when you smell your chosen scent, you will be like Pavlov's dogs and immediately want to treat yourself well.

I have a drawer like this for myself. I will share what is in it just for example but you must put in what relaxes you the most. To begin with I keep a wonderful, soft nightgown, and candles of all types. Next, there are some inspirational and soothing CD's and brand new books by my favorite authors. Further to soothe the savage stress beast, I keep perfume, and lotions and bath beads. For me, there is nothing greater than a fresh notebook and an un-opened pen, (even though I am very computer savvy, there is no comparison to writing the traditional way. It is like having an old friend to listen to your every thought). To top this off, I have my favorite snacks and specialty coffee (decaf for these relaxing moments) and tea of all types. I also have my standby favorite movies, guaranteed to make me laugh or just plain old feel good. I have Some Like It Hot, Stuart Saves His Family, While You Were Sleeping, and Sleepless in Seattle and It's A Wonderful Life.
