Play Away the Stress of the Day

Jun 12, 2001 - © Julie J. Murelle

If you are a parent, it would be my guess that you have had many days like this. You wake up in the morning greeted by wails of, "Get me breakfast!" "Where is my backpack?" and, "The dog ran off with my left shoe!" The induction to this fresh new day is wails of imminent tragedy and chaos. You drag yourself from the nestled safety of your covers and seek coffee. On your way to the kitchen you dislodge the wayward shoe from the dogs drooling lips. You then pour cheerios with one hand while grinding coffee beans with the other. In the two seconds it has taken you to get to the kitchen a fight has broken out in the living room. It seems that the baby has stolen your older child's underwear and is now attempting to put them on the dog. Does any of this sound remotely familiar?

Having kids can be an on going source of petty stresses, but did you know that your children can actually help you reduce your stress?

Have you ever just stopped your day to play with your children? You can learn so much by spending quality time with these little cherubs. So without further ado here is my top ten ways that you can get rid of stress with your kids.

1. Take a walk. Kids love to go on walks. It is a great way to leave the stresses of the household behind, to spend quality time with your kids and to get some fresh air.

2. Blow bubbles together. It is way hard to worry about the mortgage while you are sending bubbles through out your yard and I like the bonus laugh I get when my dogs try to chase the bubbles and then look all confused when the bubbles pop upon acquisition.

3. Spin in circles with your child and then lay on the floor and wait for the room to stop spinning. Another favorite kid game, guaranteed to take your mind from the bills. (You may vomit but you will not be thinking of your bills.)

4. Lay in the yard and tell each other what the clouds look like.

5. Play your favorite childhood game with your kids. I love to play Barbies with my daughter. I was poor growing up and I could not afford all the cool Barbie stuff that was on the market, so now I love to play with all the neato stuff my daughter has.
