Your Reiki Lineage; Your Reiki Family

© Reverend Dina Ely

It's true; knowing your Reiki lineage is not a vital nor even important facet of practicing Reiki. But many practitioners find that understanding the flow of energy from generation to generation, and then to them, helps ground them and give them a powerful sense of historic purpose.

When I say "Reiki lineage", I don't mean bloodlines along which Reiki practitioners have come. I don't know many people who have multiple Reiki practitioners in their blood or adopted family. When I mean by the phrase is the line along which Reiki has traveled to you, as far back as you can trace it.

I am very fortunate. My Master, the lady who attuned me to Reiki, traced my Reiki lineage all the way back to Dr. Usui! In what ended up being a very serendipitous occurrence, just as I was becoming curious about tracing my Reiki lineage and finding out how far back I could go, a lovely certificate (suitable for framing, no less!) with my entire lineage arrived in my mailbox. Courtesy of my Master, who so graciously did all the hard work involved in tracing our Reiki roots.

For some people, who employ the use of Reiki "guides" (essentially, spirit guides who oversee a practitioner's work with Reiki), knowing the generations past along their lineage is essential to knowing which spirits to invoke. For those of us who don't use guides, but are nonetheless interested in fostering a healthy sense of history and tradition in our Reiki practice, the lineage can be a great source of power and pride.

Just like your blood family, looking along your "family tree", you come upon a sort of familial bond with the people who form your Reiki lineage...whether you know them, or not. All of us know our Masters, but most of us don't know our Master's Master! Yet we have a bond to that person, and to every person who came along the way to bringing you to Reiki. Without their interest in practicing Reiki, where would you be?

And so your Reiki lineage becomes your "Reiki family"; if you are fortunate enough to know several generations, you are truly blessed. You can rely upon that family for support, confer with them for advice and rely upon their wisdom for techniques. Even if you practice Reiki differently than the prior generations, you still have the ultimate common ground-the love with which you come to, and work with, Reiki energy.
