Reiki for the Middle East, in a Time of Conflict

Mar 21, 2003 - © Reverend Dina Ely

Today I sat at my desk at work and listened to the sound of bombs raining down upon Baghdad.

It occurred to me when this conflict started, that even though I lived through the first Gulf War, I hadn't heard the sound of bombs before. Not like this. In this conflict, media is embedded with troops in such a way that we are seeing warfare so closely, so intimately, that it truly sends a chill right down to my bones.

There is no glamour in war; there is hurt, and hate, and pain.

That's not to say war isn't necessary, in the same way that radiation is necessary to cancer patients. You must take action to remove the root of the problem, and there is unfortunate collateral damage, but we also strive to keep that damage to an absolute minimum.

Reiki is about love, compassion, and peace. How does a Reiki practitioner justify all the strife in the world? Surely, if Reiki is a universal energy, it should permeate the universe, bringing nothing but calm and wellness?

The truth is, Reiki is within and without us all, all the time, but is only effective if we let it be. One of the first thing Reiki practitioners learn is that they must intend the flow of Reiki, for Reiki to flow. We must open ourselves to Reiki in order for Reiki to work its magic.

So Reiki doesn't effect those who don't recognise its power.

But that's not to say that we, as practitioners, can't intend, hope, and pray that the light and love of Reiki will fill the world.

And even though I am far removed from Iraq, from the danger and the destruction taking place, my heart breaks for every soul involved in this conflict, on any and all sides. And as a Reiki practitioner, and as a Reverend, I feel the least I can do is apply my energy to prayer and to sending Reiki into that region.

That's right-you can beam Reiki into a region-why not? You can send Reiki into another person on the other side of the world, and we know you can send Reiki to multiple people at one time, so why not send Reiki to all the occupants of the Middle East?

I am but one small force, but I will do this, in the hope that somewhere, the Reiki will alleviate the suffering of someone, anyone-one human soul, flesh and bone, just like me.
