Learn to Let Joy into Your Life

In order to give and receive Reiki most successfully, being in a relaxed and joyful state of mind is important. Since Reiki is a joyful, compassionate exchange of energy, it should be attempted with the utmost of both emotions-and what better to ensure this than to treat yourself to something you love, or something that relaxes you, before your session?

We should all take some time, on occasion, to make a list of things that please us, and then attempt to work more of those things into our daily lives. Reiki can take care of a lot-from emotional and physical healing to working little miracles inside us all-but we still have to live well in order to remain open to the Reiki within and without us.

So don't be afraid to pamper yourself every once in a while. Start by taking a piece of paper and making a list of everything you enjoy. For me, it would include (in no particular order)...

1. Hot chocolate spiced chai from the gourmet deli up the street

2. Cuddling with my kitty Phoebe

3. Talking to my lover

4. Taking long hot bubbly baths

5. Going out to eat with family and friends

6. Curling up with a scary DVD, knowing I'm protected in my warm, safe house

7. Spending time in prayer and meditation with my patron lord and spiritual husband

8. Reminiscing about my childhood and family members who've passed

9. Visiting cemeteries

10. Playing a good roleplaying game

11. Spending time with my young (children) cousins

12. Singing and playing the Celtic harp.

13. Listening to music I love

14. Practicing Reiki on my self, family, friends & strangers

...and more. But those are the biggies.

Now, I try to make time at least once per week do to most of these. Some of them, like cuddling with Phoebe, I do every day. It's important especially in the high-paced, frenzied world of today, to take time for yourself and to enjoy that time, without any guilt.

Allowing yourself to do the things on your list will slowly but surely reform your daily attitudes. Joy has a tremendous effect on our emotional and spiritual being! And I understand there are diets, schedules, pressures, etc...there are still twenty-four blessed hours in every day. There's no excuse not to take some time for yourself. I'm guilty of not doing this too-but it's so important.

We learn in Reiki that being able to heal yourself is the key to healing others. That unless you are comfortable touching and loving yourself, you will be uncomfortable touching and loving others. I propose that part of the self-healing, and opening ourselves up to Reiki, is also giving ourselves every opportunity to be happy. So whether you are a practitioner or recipient, or just someone who's stumbled on this article and never plans to be exposed to Reiki, make your list. Hang it up someplace prominent, like on your frige or on the wall at work. Take time every day to do at least one thing on your list. You'll be happier for it!
