Every time a student asks what books they can read to learn more about Reiki, I cringe. There are so many bad books out there on Reiki that I was just terrified that one of my students would get some crazy idea about Reiki that would influence their path in a negative way. Well, maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks. While waiting for the appointment for her attunement, one of my students ordered the book A Complete Book of Reiki Healing by Brigitte Muller and Horst H. Gunther. After the initial shock, I asked her how she liked it, and she raved on and on about what a great book it was.

So, I ordered it. I also read it in one sitting. You know what? She was right, this is a fabulous book for students of Reiki, or for anyone who is still wondering what in the world Reiki is, what it is used for, or how it works. One of the first quotes in the book really describes Reiki, saying "Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. The universe - the space around us - is filled with endless and inexhaustible energy. It is this universal, pristine, and productive source of power and energy that also keeps us alive. Reiki is this natural healing energy, and it flows through the hands of the Reiki channel in a powerful and concentrated form."

The authors give us a brief history of Reiki and the amazing people who helped bring the knowledge of this healing energy back to us. Next, they cover what it takes to become a Reiki practitioner. From this point, the book explodes into the healing practice, beginning with self-treatment. I've never seen such a great description of the hand positions. This is one of the most useful and important parts of the book.

A Complete Book of Reiki Healing gives a picture of each hand position and labels each hand position with a number. For example: Head position for self-healing is labeled H1 for the eyes and sinuses. There is a photograph of the practitioner with her hands in the H1 position with a caption underneath the picture that says "Over forehead, eyes and cheeks. Eye problems, gray and green cataract sinuses, head cold, allergies, asthma, cerebral nerves, pituitary gland, pineal gland. Balances the pituitary and pineal glands. The pineal gland is the central point of hormonal regulation. Very relaxing in stress situations. The 6th chakra (third eye) relates to the 1st chakra." Each hand position is covered in this way.
