Review of HOT DANCEHALL MIX #1

I'm not the biggest fan of the dancehall compilations to come out over the last couple of years. Most of them tend to focus on one or two monotonous riddims and feature uninspired lyricists that may move the crowd, but not your soul. So, I checked out Artists Only!'s Hot Dancehall Mix #1 with more than a little skepticism.

While the album's opener, Tonto Metro and Devonte's "My Type a Gal Dem," didn't move me and Zebra's "Caan Say Fe" was harmless, but not terribly impressive, things started to pick up with Tony Curtis' duet with Mahlon Stewart, "She Got It." Curtis is a singer that I hadn't heard much of until AO!'s recent release, Power of Love, which impressed me. While "She Got It" doesn't have a terribly striking riddim, Curtis' voice and Stewart's uniquely operatic chatting style work well together.

Lukie D's "Ride of Your Life" shows yet more potential from this young vocalist and Jah Mason's "Si Dem Move" is more bearable than other tracks on the same riddim. Mega Banton returns with "Unstoppable" (it's no "Sound Boy Killing") and legendary singer Johnny Osbourne lends his voice to the painfully overused Reggae Vibes-produced riddim on the best-of-the-bunch "Ghetto Mafia."

Anthony B contribues "Folley Ground" and "Hot Like Fire," which are par for the course for Anthony. There are a handful of unnotable additional tracks from Spragga Benz, Jigsy King, the Scare Dem Crew, and a few others.

Unfortunatly, this wasn't the compilation to change my concerns about recent dancehall comps, due mainly to substandard riddims. The shoddy packaging didn't help things: it looked like a lower-budget JamDown release and the back cover was littered with spelling errors, something that's sadly becoming a trademark of AO!'s reggae releases. On the good side, though, Tony Curtis, Lukie D, Johnny Osbourne, and Anthony B lend an air of legitimacy to this release, making it worth at least a cursory listen.
