Review of PLATINUM REGGAE VOLUME THREE

Artists Only! most recent entry in the {Platinum Reggae} series is a welcome change of pace from the dancehall-heavy albums that seem to be doing quite well on the charts. Don't get me wrong -- I enjoy them, too, but I miss the days of the good lovers and roots compilation.

Included here are legends like Freddie McGregor (on the simple, bubbly "Sweet Caroline") and Gregory Isaacs ("Cut About the Rest"), positive family groups like Morgan Heritage ("Love of the Common People" and "Rock N Roll"), as well as conscious young DJs like Anthony B (on the wicked "Yard and Bored").

Luciano contributes yet another hot modern roots track on the Robert Ffrench produced "Black Man King." He again proves his dominance with his powerful delivery and positive lyrics. Ffrench manages to provide another nice backdrop for Luciano. Too often, Ffrench's contributions are overlooked, but the fact is he can really churn out some nice tracks.

In addition to Anthony B's "Yard and Bored," his contemporary Sizzla contributes the slightly less effective "Thou Shalt Not Kill." While his vocals are strong, as usual, Bobby Dixon's production is a bit off due to some awkward keys.

My favorite cut comes on Yami Bolo's wonderful "Conquerer." Over another great Robert Ffrench track, Bolo shines vocally making me ask again: why isn't this guy making more records? The power and enthusiasm of early Black Uhuru can be heard on the mellow, but catchy hook: "No way can a vampire, / Conquer the children of an emperor." Another favorite comes on Jahmali's wonderful "Oh Jah." More great modern roots.

While most of the tracks on the album are produced by Ffrench, he also lays down vocals on "Free Love," reminding us of his value as a vocalist. It's funny... I didn't remember his range and control being this good.

It's going to be hard for anyone to listen to {Platinum Reggae Volume Three} and not come away feeling good. Positive vibes abound on this thoroughly enjoyable compilation.
