Review of Prince Malachi: "Love Jah"

Just months after RAS Records released Prince Malachi's outstanding Jah Light, VP Records followed suit with the similarly-titled Love Jah. Considering that I still place Jah Light amongst the best albums of the year thusfar, I was more then ready for some more material from this talented singer.

There are a number of notable differences between the RAS release and the VP release. The RAS release sported 17 tracks, VP has 11. RAS' album featured lesser-known musicians such as Niles Hailstones and Winston Rose while VP's featured standards like Sly & Robbie and Dean Fraser. And lastly, Prince Malachi produced Jah Light while Fattis manned the boards on Love Jah.

The results on the RAS album were more roots heavy and had a very unique sound to them; while the VP release isn't as strong and sounds more like the rest of the Fattis productions out there, there are still some definite stand-out tracks.

"Fire is Blazing" captures the Rasta roots spirit that Jah Light embodied throughout; strong instrumentation and confident vocals make this the pick of the litter. Other strong tracks include "Mama Don't Fret" (some nice dub effects happening midway through the track), "Ready Fi Dem," and "Prophets, Priest & King."

Between the two recent Prince Malachi releases, there are 11 extremely powerful tracks. Even though he's been around for a while, it seems like he may be reaching the high point in his career. Positive vibes are always appreciated by this reviewer and Prince Malachi provides plenty.
