It continues to be a tragic month for reggae: Augustus Pablo passed away in May, Junior Braithewaite was shot dead in Kingston several weeks ago, and now producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes has been killed in London.
Lawes was a prolific producer in the 1980s, producing a string of hits for Barrington Levy ("Shine Eye Gal" and "Prison Oval Rock"), Yellowman ("I'm Getting Married in the Morning"), and Little John ("Money Move"). He started a lot of these singers on their way on his own Volcano Records label. Coverage of Lawes' death was again very minimal. The only article I ran across was a good one by Roland Burke in the Jamaica Observer (http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/JamaicaOb... According to the Observer, Lawes was shot dead by five men travelling in a community populated by deportees, mainly from the United States. The shooting may have been drug-related. Joshua B has posted a partial Junjo discography at: http://x35.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=4908853... The column I mentioned last week about buying reggae singles online has been pushed back a week. You will see it next Friday. Go To Page: 1
