Review of Luciano's "Sweep Over My Soul"

When the world was introduced to Luciano in 1995, it was with one of the most powerful and spiritual roots tracks of the year, "It's Me Again Jah" on VP Records. Two years later he shifted to Island to release "Messenger," whose title track was certainly one of the best of the year. This year, Luciano is back on VP with another solid release, "Sweep Over My Soul."

While the past two albums had a handful of very powerful tracks, there were also a few tracks that were a bit off-the-mark pulling down the overall quality of the album. This time around, though, there may not be more than one out-and-out spectacular song ("Can't Stop Jah Works"), "Sweep Over My Soul" is the best all-around release Luciano has graced us with yet.

"Can't Stop Jah Works" is a very powerful roots track in the tradition of "It's Me Again Jah" and "Messenger," with some added spoken word that works really well. Other notable showings are "Ulterior Motive," an upbeat old-school style track; "Final Call," a slow, driving, echo-heavy tune; and "Talking 'Bout," a dream collaboration with Morgan Heritage. Production is handled by "Fattis" Burrell (his best work yet) and the musicians include Sly & Robbie, Dean Fraser, and Donald Dennis.

Luciano is fast becoming one of those artists we can count on each time around for an uplifting tune, and I think he'll continue to bless us with conscious lyrics and strong stage shows well into the future.
