Characteristic -- Configuration management
Tools largely based upon the make paradigm separate information about linkage from the modules themselves. HYPERTEXT No equivalent tools are in use, although some tools now manage links and identify changes. Web documents do not readily separate linkage information from text, since the (usually) embedded links are difficult to extract. COMMENT Clear need for better management of hypertext documents because documents can span organizations. In the future, large programs are likely to span organizations, too. Characteristic -- Development tools LARGE PROGRAMS Most phases of the life cycle now have some tool support, which usually provides an abstraction to assist users. HYPERTEXT Many Web-page creation tools are available, including simple extensions, word processors, and more integrated packages. COMMENT Some provide abstractions; maps, for instance, show a document's structure. Similarities further reinforce the need for a better maintenance con-text. Characteristic -- Development processes LARGE PROGRAMS Design methods and notations guide the development of large programs, particularly in the early phases; often supplemented by CASE tools. Methods help transfer previous experience among developers. These are generally domain-specific and directed toward a single architectural style. HYPERTEXT No abstractions describing the overall structure of a hypertext document have gained popularity; no methods guide largely ad hoc document development. Architectural style does not exist, although organizations may adopt house styles for documentation. COMMENT Software development methods and notations have helped impose disciplined development practices. No equivalent has proved necessary for hypertext, although the lack of formal architectural styles may complicate maintenance.
