There are some positive changes being investigated. One involves giving more power to those seeking to start charter schools. As of now, local school boards have authority regarding establishment of charter schools. They are, obviously, not interested in allowing anything to exist which might highlight their own shortcomings. The State of Georgia appears to be considering giving those interested in establishing charter schools a better chance of getting approval. That appears to be a good idea.
What I would like to suggest to Georgia educators is what I would like to suggest to all people interested in improving education. Take a look at the research being done in the field of education as well as the successes in school systems across the country and around the world. Work to create a flexible system that can respond to the changing times and to the needs of future business endeavors. Develop procedures which permit parents and citizens to help develop the rules which govern the schools with regard to attendance and academics. Bring citizens and businesses into the schools to work directly with students to prepare them to be productive members of society. Our children face a world in which change will be the norm. The most important thing they can learn is how to learn. If we want the school systems to change, we are going to have to do it ourselves. We can’t leave it up to “them” any more.
