Commitment and Requirements for a Volunteer Organization

If a volunteer can't keep a commitment, rather than lose the volunteer, other options should be considered. I would think that reducing the commitment would be beneficial as long as it meets the minimum requirement. Other volunteer options might be offered which might be within reach of the volunteer. If no alternative is acceptable, such a volunteer should be treated with generosity and respect because some personal reason may exist which currently makes such a commitment impossible. A volunteer leaving with a positive feeling is more likely to return when the problem is resolved. One reason a volunteer may not be able to keep a commitment might be child care. Perhaps some volunteers might be interested in providing child care services as a volunteer. Because of their own children or other reasons, this may be all they are able to provide, but their service might allow others to work in the schools.

The issue of volunteer behavior can be a difficult one. While every possible contingency should be discussed in training, inevitably some problems and misunderstandings will arise. It would be a good idea to expand on the rules and possible consequences when problems are encountered and to alert members of any changes. My suggestion is that consequences for major offenses be clearly spelled out. There will simply be some things that can not be overlooked. Other problems will hopefully be solved with discussion, additional training, and counseling. Remember that the intention is to keep as many qualified volunteers as possible. Try not to let personal feelings interfere with that goal.

One of the biggest reasons people will be reluctant to participate is that they are not confident in the potential results. By starting with a small core group that is dedicated to the idea of volunteers working directly with students, the potential for success is improved. People beginning such an organization should not be concerned that their number is small. Success will bring others into the group. Success, like love, takes time, but if it's right, it can last forever.
