Lovable Characters and Action Scenes Keep 'Atlantis' Afloat

Jun 15, 2001 - © Heather Wadowski

Four Stars out of Five

'Atlantis' is a Disney masterpiece unlike any other Disney animated classic. It is a mature, adventurous ride that accomplishes what Twentieth Century Fox's 'Titan A.E.' tried to a year ago, but failed at doing (or so I heard).

'Atlantis' focuses on Milo Thatch (voiced by Michael J. Fox), a young man who has believed in finding the lost city of Atlantis ever since his grandfather told him stories of it as a boy. Alongside a group of explorers, Milo begins the journey of a lifetime to discover a place many believe is a myth but that he knows in heart truly exists. When he arrives in Atlantis, however, Milo quickly discovers that a member of his exploration team is a traitor out to steal the heart of Atlantis-- which although is worth millions on land, is the life source of the Atlantian people undersea. Now, Milo must choose between risking his life to save the people of Atlantis or returning home a hero with the treasure of Atlantis-- and killing the Atlantians in the process.

While the animation in 'Atlantis' isn't as detailed as past Disney masterpieces, the detail to each character that keeps audiences entertained is. From the opening scene viewers will instantly fall in love with Fox's character, which (as people could tell by the trailer alone) is almost a picture-perfect version of an animated Michael J. Fox. As lovable as Milo is however, a cast full of characters equally as memorable and engaging help steal the spotlight off of Milo just enough so that viewers don't become tired of our young hero. Whether it's the elderly and dry-witted communications expert Wilhelmina (voiced by Florence Stanley) or the smart-alecky Italian demolition expert Vinny (voiced by Don Novello), 'Atlantis' is filled with comedic sidekicks to pick up the tone of the film whenever it gets too dark.

'Atlantis' also caters to pleasing both adults and kids by not only having humor within the film directly targeted towards both demographics, but also by including a couple breathtaking action sequences no other cartoon has come close to creating. While 'Atlantis' may not have as many action scenes as other animated films outside Walt Disney Studios, it's easy to say that this film does have the most intense and believable action sequences of any animated film to date. These action scenes aren't just unnecessarily attempts by Disney to wow viewers by showcasing their increasing technology advances within the animation world either-- they really do help move the plot forward. Furthermore, these action sequences help grab the audiences' attention while detouring them away from the fact there is no soundtrack to help the story progress from scene to scene.
