Bullock shines as "Miss Congeniality"Three and a half stars out of Four In Sandra Bullock's latest comedy, Bullock plays FBI agent Gracie Hart, a FBI agent who is more manly then some of her co-workers. Not only is she stronger than the men she works with, but she also takes her job more seriously. However, her love for her job not only starts to interfere with her personal life, but interferes with her business-like approach as well. When she causes a co-worker to be placed in the line of fire, Gracie soon faces two options-- either she can stay in the office, but behind a desk, or she can go undercover to track a terrorist from striking again. The catch? The toughest, most unlady-like FBI agent on the force would have to go undercover as a Miss America Beauty Pageant contestant to find the terrorist. Against her wishes, Gracie goes undercover as Gracie Lou Freebush, otherwise known as Miss New Jersey. With a team of make-up artists (led by "Quills"' Michael Caine) wondering what they got themselves into, an FBI team waiting for her to fail and the head of the pageant (Candice Bergen) doubting ever fixing the pageant to let Bullock in, Gracie must go against the expected and not only be believable as Miss New Jersey, but catch the terrorist before he bombs the Miss America pageant as well. When the terrorist is supposedly caught before the pageant, Gracie faces her toughest challenge yet. Now, she must go on instincts and leave the FBI to track her number one suspect without anyone's help. In order to do that though, Gracie must break into the top five of the Miss America Pageant without it being fixed. In other words, Gracie has to not only prove that she's the best FBI agent there is, but also prove the one thing everyone at work has forgotten-- that she is a woman. Bullock is radiant in a role that almost seems written for her. She is reunited with the toughness that made her a star in "Speed" and adds to that a sarcastic sense of humor, a naturalness to be clumsy and a heart of gold to create the role of Gracie. Bullock's ability to play any type of woman, alongside her natural beauty, only adds to the perfectionist approach that she takes when playing Gracie Lou Freebush. Bullock is funny, touching and kicks major butt in the film-- and her role marks a giant leap forward for women's roles in films.
